TLDR: Even if you use Teflon tape, use a thread sealant on top of the tape. If the thread quality is poor the tape helps to thread smoothly. Do not over tighten fittings. Go hand tight, then just 1 - 1.5 turns more. Never more than 2 turns.
All day long over on the Facebook groups I see people using just Teflon tape on PVC fittings. Sometimes a ton of it. Then I see leaks and cracks. I've even seen people switch parts to barbs because they couldn't get a seal. Teflon tape is not necessarily supposed to be used for this application PVC <-> PVC. PVC threads are not straight threads, they are tapered. That is how they seal. Teflon tape will increases the diameter of the fitting which puts stress on the fitting and can cause it to crack if you add too much of it.
Use a PVC thread sealant. You can buy this at any hardware store. The sealant is non hardening so you can take it apart later if you want. It will serve to lubricate the threads and ensure a water tight seal. Tighten the fitting with just your hand until it gets tight, then using a tool tighten 1-1.5 turns more. Never more than 2 turns or you'll exceed the stress threshold and eventually you will get a crack and/or a leak. Yes, you can cause a leak by tightening too tight.
Don't take my word for it, do your own research. Post that research here 🙂
